Drill stop

Image taken when drilling the bridge for piano no. 003. This brass sleeve is used as a drill depth stop when drilling the bridge pin holes. Note that the lower face of the stop is champfered to 20 degrees to match the inclination of the drilling angle from the vertical. A bubble gauge is mounted on the drill, for maintaining the chosen drill angle while drilling. To minimise run-out of the stop relative to the drill bit, several depth stops are made, one for each diameter of drill used. Any run-out at the stop face will allow the stop to 'hammer' a bruise mark into the top face of the bridge cap.
